Struggling to Stick with the Gym or a Diet? Put Your Fitness Goal on Your iPhone Home Screen

Most workout and diet plans fade because we stop thinking about the goal. Learn how to put your fitness goal and a motivational quote on your iPhone Home Screen with a widget, and how to write a goal you will actually keep.

You sign up for the gym in January, and by February you have stopped going. Most of us have been there.

It is rarely about willpower. It is about how often you remember why you started. This article shows how to put your fitness or diet goal, plus a quote that keeps you going, on the screen you look at dozens of times a day: your iPhone Home Screen.

Why workout and diet plans fade

On day one, your goal is crystal clear. A few weeks later, work and daily life crowd it out. "I will skip today" adds up because the goal is out of sight for most of the day.

You unlock your phone dozens of times a day, and the Home Screen is the first thing you see. Put your goal there and you will remember it without trying.

How to write a goal that sticks

Long sentences get skipped. Keep it short enough to read at a glance.

  • Use a number: "-5 kg" or "100 squats" makes it clear whether you hit it.
  • Add a deadline: "by summer" or "before the March race" gives today a reason.
  • Pair the big goal with a tiny daily action: "-5 kg" plus "one set a day" lowers the bar.
  • Add a line that keeps you going: a favorite quote or your own motto works.

Put your goal on the Home Screen with MotiWords

You could make a wallpaper with your goal on it, but you would have to remake it every time the goal changes. A widget updates as soon as you edit the text. Here is how with MotiWords, a goal and quote widget app.

  1. 1Add your words: In MotiWords, open the Word List, tap Add, and type a goal such as "-5 kg by summer. One set a day."
  2. 2Style it: Turn on the custom style, then pick a font, text color and background. The preview shows exactly how the widget will look.
  3. 3Choose what the widget shows: In the Word List, tap the 📱 icon next to the words you want on the widget.
  4. 4Place the widget: Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap +, choose MotiWords, and pick small, medium or large.

💡MotiWords works on iOS 16 or later, and the core features are free. No sign-in is needed, and your words stay on your device. Extras such as background images and the carousel are part of Premium, a one-time purchase (the carousel requires iOS 17 or later).

Example words for training and dieting

Use them as they are or rewrite them in your own voice.

  • "-5 kg by summer. One set a day."
  • "Motivation follows action."
  • "One more rep than yesterday."
  • "A glass of water before every meal."
  • "Rest is part of the training."

When you stop noticing it

After a while, the same words fade into the background. Update the number when your weight or record changes, or switch the text color, to keep it fresh.

With the Premium carousel, you can rotate several entries on the widget, such as alternating your goal and a quote.

Summary

Whether you stick with training or a diet depends a lot on how often you remember your goal. Put a short goal with a number and a deadline on the first page of your Home Screen.

If you want to show your goal as a widget, give MotiWords a try.
